Prayer Nuts. Wood carvings of the XV century
“Prayer nuts» – is a small wooden ball carved with religious themes. On each ball, the artist spent a tremendous amount of time and energy creating the people. Balls were considered a symbol in Northern Europe and a symbol of faith. This delicate sphere was microscopically carved out of soft boxwood using tiny knives and chisels by a medieval artisan. It was an objet d’art, created for the 15th century nobility in the Netherlands, so that an individual could experience the Passion of Christ in an enhanced form of private worship. Most of them are exposed at British Museum, London.
